“De Genève à Milan” – A concert of the Geneva Chamber Orchestra

At the House of Switzerland, classical music becomes a bridge between Swiss Alpine roots and Italian inspiration. “Horlogerie et Rêve d’Italie" is a refined and evocative concert experience that weaves together Switzerland’s pastoral heritage, its legendary mastery of time, and the enduring fascination with Italy.
Following a striking surprise opening, that will be instantly transporting the audience to the Swiss mountains and their charming landscapes, the programme will unfold as a dialogue between nature, mechanics, and travel.
Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence” recalls Italian warmth and lyricism, while Haydn’s Symphony No. 101 “The Clock” playfully echoes the precision of Swiss watchmaking through its ticking musical mechanisms.
Time itself becomes a central theme in Ligeti’s “Six Bagatelles”, whose repetitive, almost mechanical patterns evoke movement, rhythm, and modernity. The journey culminates with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 “Italian”, a radiant and emotional tribute to Italy - composed by a composer who, notably, spent his holidays in Switzerland - bringing the programme full circle.
Last but not least: the concert concludes with a vibrant suprise encore!
The concert will be conducted by Raphaël Merlin, Artistic and Musical Director of the Geneva Chamber Orchestra, and performed by an 18-piece chamber orchestra, combining strings, winds, brass, percussion, and… Alpine spirit.
